Middle Eastern and North African countries possess similar features of oppression and restrictions in the public and political spheres, share history and culture, as well as a common context of justice and accountability. Most also feature emerging and well-established movements for fighting oppressed rights, meaning there is a wealth of knowledge that can be relayed and shared across the region. This research is the first step towards developing a consolidated regional strategy to tackle impunity in the MENA region. With the participation of 19 practitioners and experts in the field of justice and accountability in a survey study, this white paper illuminated the most common and critical issues in the field, and the strengths and weaknesses of civil society. The paper also suggests regional strategies to end impunity that the perpetrators have long enjoyed and to provide justice and accountability for the victims’ communities.
